Hartbeespoort translated from Afrikaans, means "gateway of the hartebeest," a local antelope species. The oldest neighbourhood of the Hartbees is Schoemansville. It was named after General Hendrik Schoeman, who originally owned the farm where Hartbeespoort Dam was built.
